In 1494, Fra Luca Bartolomeo de Pacioli published his monumental work, "Summa de arithmetica, geometria, proportioni et proportionalita," standardizing the double-entry accounting method.
The Publication of Summa in 1494
Within Summa was a 27-page treatise entitled "Particularis de Computis et Scripturis" (Details of Calculation and Recording). Pacioli introduced the Memorial (scrapbook), the Journal (chronological record), and the Ledger (alphabetical index of accounts).
